I had never before thought of having a doula for my birth. After hearing from my doctor about the value of such professionals, I decided to pursue it, but I wasn’t very convinced I’d find someone with whom I’d feel comfortable for such a personal process.
Luckily, MassHealth had a directory of all registered doulas to facilitate my search. Given the importance of the personal interaction to me, I spent a lot of time choosing someone. I reviewed over 100 names, shortlisted 15, and spoke with about 10 doulas.
Pam was the first, and I immediately felt she’d be the one. I trusted that intuition and couldn’t have done better.
Pam has something very special: she is willing to understand who you are on a deeper level, the level that I feel is necessary to truly support you. She has a lot of life experience and mothering experience, and to me that was very important. Very importantly, she was able to blend scientific and medical knowledge with a more natural, intuitive wisdom that completely dissolved any fear I initially had of the birth process.
Pregnancy, birth, and postpartum were incredible experiences for me, and I can attribute part of that to what I learned from Pam: from the basics of birth, to the support groups available, to the reflections she encouraged me to make about things I otherwise would never have thought about.
I deeply appreciate how she seamlessly participated in the dynamic between my partner and me; for teaching me that labor is not a problem to be solved, but a natural, active process; her relentless reflection after the birth about what she could have done differently to be an even better support; and her very proactive communication throughout the process.
She won’t be at my second birth because I’ll be living in a different country, but we will mentally “have her” there with us.
