Mel is truly one of a kind!
I was probably around 6 months pregnant when my parnter and I met with Mel, and we knew they were the right doula for us as soon as we left our first meeting. Mel is passionate about birth work and is extremely knowledgeable around pregnancy, birth and postpartum.
During my pregnancy, Mel met with us twice to prepare for birth and postpartum. We didn't know that doulas could help in this way - to prepare for things other than birth itself. We talked about our "ideal" birth, feelings around birth/postpartum, made many lists around how to care for ourselves/each other/our home during this season. This preparation was EXTREMELY helpful not only for us to "get things done" but to calm my nerves around all of the upcoming changes.
Then the day came: our baby's birthday. As much as I prepared myself for this day, it was beyond helpful to have Mel show up to labor with me at home and to also let us know WHEN to leave for the birth center. I had an extremely quick birth for this being my first birth, which made things a bit scary for me and my partner. All the more reason it was helpful to have an "expert" by our sides to help us navigate it all.
I had a rough first few weeks of postpartum with some additional complications. Mel gave us the time that we needed before scheduling our post-birth session. This session was SUPER helpful emotionally. Mel came to our home and we just hung out and discussed my birth story. Doing this felt like a small weight was lifted off my shoulders and was extremely validating.
Overall, I would highly recommend Mel as a birth doula. If you're looking for someone who is kind, yet direct, and knows their shit, Mel is the doula for you!
