Mel made our pregnancy, birthing and postpartum experience one that was filled with queer joy and safety. As a non gestational parent in a queer relationship, many worries came to mind in ensuring the care of my nonbinary partner throughout their pregnancy and during labor. Having Mel’s calm & confident demeanor behind us through every step of the way and inside the delivery room made a world of difference in the care of our family and wishes, as well as the care of our newborn through what was a very scary beginning of life. Had they not advocated in the way they did, I’m not sure our baby’s outcome would have been the healthy one we are enjoying today (I say “enjoying” with a grain of salt as we are entering the sleep regression stage).
If you are queer, get a queer doula. Get Mel!!! They gave us so many witty comebacks to any strange, invasive, or off-color questions we were presented with throughout the process. As a birth partner, I felt my presence and role were so important and I felt empowered with the information I needed to play a crucial part in my partner’s labor & delivery. Mel gave us so many helpful resources and guides for what to do before, during, and after birth and furthermore, connected us with queer affirming care providers and queer families locally. They made a world of difference and we are forever grateful for Mel.
