Kaylen helped me realise my birthing goals and more, even when things became unpredictable. She's the reason I look back on birth experiece with so much gratitude.
Kaylen gave us evidence-based information so we could create a birth plan that felt right for us. She asked thoughtful questions that helped us better understand our preferences. Months before we went to the hospital, she helped us with questions for my care team so we could advocate for the birth experience we wanted.
One of my goals was to labour at home, and Kaylen fully supported us in achieving that. After my water broke, she came home at midnight and stayed with us through the night as contractions came and went. She guided both me and my husband through what to expect, supported my husband with logistics so I could stay focused on labour, and supported me with breathing techniques, massages, positioning and comfort.
Knowing how important it was for me to stay home, she and my husband drew me a bath, lit candles, and put on music so I could relax. One of the clearest memories I have is during active labour, when I was bearing down with everything I had while Kaylen held me steady by my elbows with her calm presence. Kaylen brought lightness, sillyness and humour to the room, even in those intense moments.
I had a long labour and Kaylen stayed with me until the very last moments, when they had to wheel me into the operating room for a C-section. Even though this wasn't the outcome we had hoped for, I felt proud of how my husband, Kaylen, and I had approached labour together, knowing we had made every decision intentionally.
Those 100 hours of labour became a joyful and beautiful bonding experience for me and my husband. I give so much credit to Kaylen for creating that space for us. She made me feel safe, nurtured and advocated for through my birth experience. We are so grateful she was part of our birth story.
