We interviewed close to 20 doulas before we found Liza, and we knew in the first meeting that she was the one. She has a rare mix of calm, expertise, and real warmth, and she listens in a way that makes you feel heard.
She never once made us feel like we were asking too many questions, or silly ones. She welcomed more. Her responses were always prompt, and she knew when to give us a concrete answer versus when to walk us through a few research-backed options and let us decide.
The one thing that gave us pause early on was that she didn't do in-person practice of labor positions. Her view was that labor is too unpredictable to rehearse for. We were unsure about that at first. Going through it, she was completely right. She guided us into every position we needed in the moment, and nothing about it required prep. She also sent us resources along the way, like the Miles Circuit videos, and answered everything we asked about them.
We cannot imagine labor without her. The emotional support, the physical support, the massages. She came the moment we needed her and stayed with us through all of it. Labor is a moving target and she helped us navigate it as a thought partner, and at times she spoke to the nurses and midwives on our behalf. One of the midwives came up to us afterward and said "you got a great doula," which says a lot about how she advocated for us without ever working against the hospital staff.
She also supported us postpartum. Belly massages, breastfeeding help, newborn questions whatever we needed. We always walk away from a conversation with her feeling more hopeful than before.
Thank you, Liza, for all of it.
