As an emergency physician and someone who thought I was already a pretty supportive husband, I was honestly skeptical about what a doula could add to our birth experience. At our first meeting, I think Kristin picked up on that skepticism. With a smile she said, “Don’t worry, I’ll make you a believer.” She wasn’t wrong.
Kristin completely exceeded every expectation I had.
Her care for my wife during labor was extraordinary. She had an incredible toolbox of techniques to help manage pain, encourage progress, and keep my wife calm and confident. What surprised me most, however, was the care she extended to me.
While fully focused on supporting my laboring wife, Kristin would regularly check in with me, asking when I’d last eaten, had something to drink, or needed a quick bathroom break. Those simple moments reminded me that if I wasn’t functioning at my best, I couldn’t be the husband my wife needed. I never expected a doula to support me as well, but she understood that caring for the whole family matters.
As medical decisions arose, Kristin became an invaluable sounding board. She helped us understand our options, communicate effectively with the medical team, and ensured my wife’s birth plan was respected whenever it was safe to do so. She worked seamlessly with the incredible staff at BC Women’s and made what could have been a stressful experience feel collaborative and empowering.
I went into this experience convinced I would never hire a doula. I left wondering how anyone could go through childbirth without one.
I’ve since recommended Kristin to many friends who are about to become fathers, and I will continue to do so without hesitation. She is knowledgeable, compassionate, responsive, and an absolute professional. We already look forward to having her with us for any future deliveries.
Thank you, Kristin, for making me a believer.
