Shamika was everything I wanted in a doula and a little bit more. As a first-time parent, I was often confused and overwhelmed at what was happening to both me and to my baby. Not only did I have complications due to gestational diabetes, but my son was also frank breech - a fancy way of saying that he was both out of position and folded in half. When my ECV turned into an unplanned c-section at 37+1 weeks, Shamika was able to make it to the hospital to support our family in record time. Although my birth didn't go as planned - at all - Shamika's education helped me to understand what was happening and why the birth had to happen this way.
If Shamika was good with the birth process, she was indispensable with postpartum. My wife and I were totally unprepared to have brought our son home this early and not only were we a little lost with his care, but we were relying on the last 2-3 weeks of pregnancy to get our infant care infrastructure in place. We looked forward to her visits as we knew that when she left, we would be so much more informed, knowledgeable, and confident in ourselves as parents.
Our son recently turned six months old, and looking back, Shamika was such a wonderful part of his birth and his first few months of life. If we have another child, we will absolutely be re-hiring Shamika as our doula!
