I was induced, so we waited to bring Julie in until things started moving along. In the meantime, she was great about communicating with my husband via text and offering support remotely. At the hospital, Julie was engaged from the start, anticipating what we needed before we even asked. She was never just standing by. She felt like an integral part of our birth team the entire time.
When the doctor offered to break my water or start Pitocin to move labor along, Julie helped me feel confident waiting a bit longer to see if my body would take over on its own. I'm so glad she was there for that conversation because I ended up not needing either intervention.
My plan was always to get an epidural. Unfortunately, my first one wasn't placed optimally and left me with several hours of painful contractions. Julie was a huge help to both me and my husband as I dealt with pain I hadn't expected, and she advocated for me with the hospital staff to get a new epidural placed after other fixes didn't work. She also kept me moving through different positions to help the baby get into a better position and descend before pushing. I only had to push for an hour, which I credit to Julie's help getting the baby to descend and her coaching through pushing.
Julie also collaborated beautifully with hospital staff, helped translate what was happening at each step, and kept my husband calm and supportive too. The on-call midwife, who's been doing this for 50 years, told us Julie was one of the best doulas she's ever worked with.
