Sonja is a wonderful doula.
The level of support she offered, and her knowledge of pregnancy, birth, newborn care, and the postnatal experience, was nothing short of outstanding. She came to our house two times in preparation for our home birth. We discussed all sorts of topics related to birth, focusing on advice and information relevant to our personal birth plan. She was honest, reassuring, and on multiple occasions advised us to seek clarification or advice from our midwifery team. Collectively, this resulted in my partner and I feeling very secure in our home birth plan. Of note, this was our first baby as well.
Once my labour progressed to an appropriate stage, Sonja arrived at our home. She was instrumental in helping us move through the process, i.e., when to set up the birth pool, when to call the midwives, etc. My partner and I had taken birth classes and listened to midwife instructions on what to do once “x-y-z” occurs; however, the moment can be overwhelming, and it can be challenging to identify the appropriate next steps. Sonja’s presence gave us a lot of comfort and helped keep a calm environment.
Something I really valued from Sonja is that she really focused on supporting both myself (birthing individual) and my partner in our journey. She made sure to inform my partner of what to expect during the birth, offer direct guidance on how to support me in labour and delivery, and directly asked him about situations or circumstances that were beyond his comfort zone. This encouragement supported my partner in being very hands-on during my labour and the delivery of our child. It was such a beautiful experience that we are grateful to have had.
We are so thankful for Sonja and her influence on our birth.
