Testimonial for Akemi Tsuru CD(DONA)
We interviewed a few doulas, and we knew Akemi was “the one." She felt like a good cultural and interpersonal fit. Akemi is knowledgeable, offered great resources, and curated trainings. We met multiple times in our home and Akemi helped us understand our desires, write our birth preferences, and asked tough questions to prepare for what-if scenarios.
We had an unplanned induction and Akemi was responsive the entire process. When it neared go-time, she quickly showed up at the hospital at midnight and brought an air of calm, warmth, and safety. I felt like we were fighting an uphill battle, as we were pressured with a lot of medical interventions. Hours/days into labor, we were exhausted, but with Akemi by our side she helped us navigate this with her wisdom and incredible instincts. Akemi gently and expertly asked what I wanted at precisely the right moments to make my wishes known in front of medical staff.
It is very likely that this is my only birth and it was important for me to try for an unmedicated, vaginal delivery. And WE DID IT!!! Akemi coached us through exercises and poses to help the baby descend. With her guidance and the TENS unit, the pain was manageable. I felt very empowered during the entire process (after delivery, I thought "Hell yeah! I could totally do this again!") and thankful that Akemi was part of our team. She also provided a balance of guidance, while giving me and my husband space to feel like this was our moment. I was so thankful she remembered to take pictures!
After the birth, she came over for a beautiful debrief session (my mom shed tears of gratitude when meeting Akemi!). She continues to check in, be a source of support, and shares resources. Akemi felt like a wise, older sister on my birth journey. We feel so lucky to have experienced her magic!
