Having a doula was not something I thought was necessary, but our midwife highly recommended having one as a first time mom. I am beyond grateful to have had Patty by our side through my pregnancy and especially my birth. I felt reassured knowing that I had an extra person to reach out to if I had questions throughout pregnancy and it was helpful for my husband to gain knowledge about pregnancy from someone other than me. I also really appreciated her knowledge of pain management techniques that I was not as knowledgable about prior to my pregnancy. When I did go into labor the pain went from 0-100 and my contractions were 2-5 min apart from the start. I cannot imagine going through all of what I went through without Patty's calm and knowledgable pressence. She made me feel safe and helped bring back my sense of calm when I didn't think it was possible. She also listened to my body and helped me encourage baby to move into the correct position, while still allowing me to move at my own pace as much as possible. I never felt forced to move into a position or do something that didn't intuitively feel right. Due to the trust that was built from the beginning I knew that Patty had baby and I's best interest in mind even when things didn't feel great. From day 1 Patty supported my wants and beliefs surrounding pregnancy and birth, as did my homebirth midwife. However, I also felt confident that if my midwife felt the hospital was a safer place to deliver at any point, Patty would have helped me achieve my birth plan as best as possible given whatever circumstances were thrown at us. I cannot wait to work with her again whenever God chooses to bless us with another little one!
