I really did not know what a doula was when we first started looking for one, but my partner felt strongly that it would be helpful, and I wanted to support her. I went into the process somewhat skeptically, admittedly influenced by misconceptions. Well before the end of our experience with Dawn Batson, I knew without question that we had made the right decision. Having our first child without family living within a thousand miles of Los Angeles felt daunting, and we also wanted the experience of becoming parents to feel deeply our own. Dawn helped make that possible. Even if we had incredible family right next door, we would still hire her again in a heartbeat. She gave us the knowledge, confidence, and calm we needed to become the parents we wanted to be and to welcome support from others on our own terms.
Dawn was incredible from the prenatal period through birth and postpartum care. She felt far more like a trusted friend than a hired professional, and her presence was invaluable. Shortly after delivery, a serious complication arose while the hospital team worked quickly to stabilize things. Dawn stayed calmly by my partner’s side, reassuring her, helping her stay grounded, and making an extremely frightening moment feel far less overwhelming. Even now, two years later, I still get emotional thinking about that day and how grateful I am that Dawn was with us. She also helped my partner advocate for herself in the hospital, which was empowering and important, and she supported me emotionally too. Postpartum, she continued showing up for us several times each week and helped us become the parents we hoped to be.
Do I recommend Dawn? Absolutely. Will we hire her again? Without hesitation. If we are lucky enough to have another child someday, Dawn will be among the very first people we contact.
