Due to preeclampsia, my baby was born 6 weeks early and was in the NICU for several weeks. When we came home, the transition from 24/7 care to being just the two of us seemed overwhelming. Prior to receiving postpartum doula support, I felt incredibly alone and isolated. Because of Becky’s background as a mental health professional, I felt comfortable speaking to her about how to navigate complicated family dynamics. She provided advice and resources to further help me to create boundaries as a new parent, advocate for myself, and connect with other mothers in the community. Being able to take time for myself each week to rest, read, or take a nap felt absolutely invaluable, as I’d never have been able to take two hours for myself without Becky’s help with my baby. She also helped with dishes and laundry when visiting us. Despite all the preparation I did and books I read, actual life with a newborn took so much out of me. I was constantly busy and struggled to find the time to brush my teeth or take a shower. Postpartum doula support allows you to pause, collect yourself, and recover whilst knowing your baby is in good hands.
