Though she seemed very kind, a few problems occurred in our experience that made it so I wish I had not decided to work with this doula. Bryn did not convey what to expect and when she would be present as a doula during an induction. She shared passive comments about how "doulas don't show up until active labor", while during the induction process after I had let her know I was feeling anxious, but no direct or helpful communication to clarify her role prior to her showing up and making those comments. The on call physician at the hospital insisted I push laying on my back (very old school) and she stayed silent, didn't advocate or help create space for choice, which would have felt supportive and helpful, though my nurse thankfully did eventually. Bryn also left before the placenta was delivered (labor is not over until a placenta is delivered), and the subsequent hours were filled with a postpartum hemorrhage and trauma for my spouse and me. The postpartum visit felt minimizing and disconnected from our experience. I'm glad other people have positive experiences with her, however this was not something I would recommend. She did not seem experienced in birth doula-ing and my spouse and I were let down with the lack of presence and follow through with staying until labor was complete.
