I’ve been a practicing birth doula for over a decade, and had the pleasure of befriending and working alongside Jess years before my own perinatal journey began. I knew that when it was time to welcome my baby, I wanted someone who would bring something very important to my care team - ritual and creativity. Jess was the perfect person to support my partner and me because they approach birthwork as an artform. I felt held throughout my pregnancy knowing Jess was there as a resource for ideas and a place of validation when I felt unsure. When we learned my baby was breech, Jess held me through the pivot of a planned homebirth becoming a planned cesarean birth. They welcomed this shift with the celebration, calm and the insight that I needed for my belly birth to be a sacred experience. Jess met us at the hospital bright and early on the first day of Spring and held us through a gentle and empowering cesarean delivery, capturing film photographs that I will cherish forever. Postpartum was so blissful and sweet with visits, herbs and steady reminders that the early days are temporary. This opportunity to know and experience Jess and the care they curate for each client was something I knew to be true as a professional, but to receive it on a personal level was absolutely life changing. I will never forget making eye contact with Jess in the OR and seeing the joy and admiration on their face, offering me the presence and witness I needed in that moment that only a true artist can bring.
