We are first time parents and don't have family out in the PNW, so we knew we needed someone in our corner with multiples experience once we found out we were having twins. Our goal throughout our entire pregnancy was to have an unmedicated birth with limited interventions. When we first met with Sheilena and told her this, she was on board 100% and let us know that we had her full support no matter what. She was always calm and realistic with what to expect. While a lot of our doctors discussed the extreme scenarios and what could go wrong - often acting like an unmedicated, natural birth with twins was unrealistic - talking Sheilena always reminded us that pregnancy and birth is a beautiful experience and that we had the agency to have the birth experience we dreamed of (obviously, true medical emergencies aside).
I didn't know this until after I delivered, but Sheilena had been at another birth and had only gotten home a few hours before my husband called to tell her I was in labor. And she still drove all the way to Seattle and was fully present, helpful, & attentive. I remember when I was laboring in the hospital, I got to a point where I felt like I couldn't do it anymore and I started saying I might need an epidural. Sheilena calmly reminded me that I was already 8cm, that I was managing the pain and contractions really well, and that I was right in the hardest part of labor. That boost of confidence and support helped me get back into the mindset of not only "I can do this", but "I am doing this!"
Having twins, I had to deliver in an operating room - non negotiable. There were a lot of people, so having an extra person who I knew, an extra hand to hold, truly made all the difference. Having Sheilena was, I think, key in our success of having such a successful twin birth. She also took the most beautiful photos for us during labor/delivery. We will cherish them forever! Eternally grateful to Sheilena!!
