My number one piece of advice for any expecting parent will always be to hire the Birth Collective! With my first birth I made the mistake of not hiring a doula, no surprise that birth experience went horribly and I was left pretty traumatized. When I got pregnant with my second I received several recommendations for the Birth Collective and I hope every single person who gave me that recommendation has a lifetime of green lights, perfect hair days, and all the other wonderful things in life because working with this team was a huge blessing! During my pregnancy things went smoothly so I didn’t feel like I needed much support. When I did have a question or concern the team was always quick to provide a kind, supportive, educated response. Austin ended up attending my birth and she is someone who is truly made for birth work. From the moment she arrived at the hospital she provided exceptional support. She anticipated my every need with an incredible calmness and kindness but was still direct and realistic when I panicked and was refusing to push and demanding an epidural even though baby’s head was practically coming out. After a speedy labor my placenta decided to be a diva and cause a scene but Austin was still right there through it all keeping my husband and I calm and cared for. She never hesitated to hold my hand, feed me a snack, or help hand express colostrum for me. I cannot state enough how much better my second birth experience was by having someone who was there solely to support me. Having a birth team that never made me feel pressured, judged, or unsafe was such healing experience (and should honestly be the standard but unfortunately some providers just suck). Right after having my baby I told Austin I was absolutely never having another child but she made such a positive impact on my birth experience that I might just consider having a third. So yes, hiring the Birth Collective really is worth it!
