There's so much to figure out as first-time parents — from building a birth plan to those first weeks at home, our heads were filled with questions. They bring knowledge from every birth and hospital experience they have, and as their clients, you get to benefit from all of it. The institutional knowledge is priceless.
That knowledge showed up in concrete ways. Without them, we wouldn't have known about our daughter's oral ties, or to sign up for pelvic floor PT so far in advance — it books up fast. I learned to express colostrum because of them, and the 9 vials I collected pre-birth kept our baby from needing formula in the hospital. They're also deeply connected to the Seattle/Tacoma region, so when we needed referrals, they had trusted professionals ready.
I'd like to think we could do this without a doula — but there's significantly less suffering and way more confidence with one. Being able to fact-check with a knowledgeable team keeps anxiety in check. Oh, and WAY less Googling.
They are some of the most selfless people I've ever encountered, giving their time nearly around the clock. When I had trouble with milk production after a hemorrhage, they sourced donor milk and got it to us that same night from Tacoma to Seattle. In a medical world that doesn't always offer this compassion, it feels good to be seen and advocated for.
Worth every penny — and when we have more children, we'll be rebooking without a second thought.
