My partner and I have used Jo Ann as a doula for the births of both of our children. It is apparent that Jo Ann's passion for birth and helping birthing parents has only increased with time.

She not only works with clients, but also teaches classes to groups on how to prepare your pelvic floor and body for birth through the Body Ready Method. Jo Ann views birth as a transformative experience and she frames the Body Ready Method as a way for birthing parents to feel in control of the controllables in birth and feel empowered rather than fearful of the birthing process.

To me, having a doula like this is sacred. And that is what it felt like in the delivery room when I was in the final stages of pushing. Things progressed quickly with my second labor, so Jo Ann only made it to the hospital in time for the last few pushes. I felt a cold wash cloth on my forehead and she moved around the delivery room like a pro, knowing just what to do and when. When the baby was born, she captured our first moments on our phones.

During the hours of labor when Jo Ann wasn't there, my partner and I used the Body Ready Method movements. Since we knew what station the baby was, we could focus on movements to get baby engaged in the pelvis. I was induced this time around because of PROM and the contractions from Pitocin came quickly. Instead of feeling scared, I listened to my body. With the stronger contractions came the need to move my body differently than during early labor.

Because Jo Ann arrived later to the delivery, she offered to provide postpartum support or partial refund. Jo Ann helped me with breastfeeding, emotional support when I broke into tears about missing my first born. She brought us soup, made us lunch. She held the baby while I took a long shower. And we reflected on the birth. Again, sacred work that I'll never ever forget.
