I hired Melanie Suarez of Birthing with Power to provide independent support and advocacy during my planned home birth.
She was referred to me by Christine Taylor of Birth by Grace, LLC. At the time, I did not fully understand the extent of their close professional relationship. In retrospect, that dynamic raised concerns about neutrality and whether I could expect truly independent advocacy if issues arose.
During labor, I expected consistent presence and active support. There were moments where I did not feel adequately supported. When traction was applied during placental delivery, I did not receive independent clarification or advocacy in that moment.
After delivery, while the birthing tub was being emptied, my husband was told it was “his turn” to help, immediately after our newborn’s birth. The golden hour was not respected. Instead of safeguarding a quiet and protected bonding environment, Melanie and the midwife remained nearby, talking and being disruptive during what should have been an intimate and uninterrupted moment. As a doula, she should understand how important that time is for a mother and newborn, and it was not honored.
During a postpartum visit at my home, Melanie wore a very strong perfume, which felt inappropriate in a newborn setting.
An image taken at the moment of my child’s birth was later posted publicly on Melanie’s professional Instagram account without my consent. Explicit consent for image use was never provided.
I recognize that there were moments where she showed compassion. However, I ultimately expected stronger neutrality, advocacy, and professional boundaries from someone in the role of doula.
Families deserve independent support during birth, free from conflicts of interest and with full respect for privacy.
