I am grateful that my husband and I chose Julie to be our birth doula for our second pregnancy. From the beginning, Julie was a joy to work with. She helped me navigate my prenatal appts to ensure that my wishes were being respected and that I was asking the best questions for informed consent, provided much appreciated emotional support when unexpected things happened, was able to supply a wealth of information and knowledge, and was always happy to receive updates after each appointment. I had hyperemesis gravidarum my whole pregnancy and appreciate that Julie was honest about not having much experience with it. In typical Julie fashion, she was ready to jump in and learn more.

In the third trimester I switched over to a birthing center that was better aligned with my wishes. Julie was fully supportive in the shift and had no problem adjusting to the change. In fact, without knowing that I was already considering the birthing center, Julie suggested I consider it earlier in my pregnancy. It was great to see that she knew me well enough to recommend it.

Julie worked wonderfully with the midwives. She even attended a prenatal visit with me so that she was familiar with the location and the midwives. My active labor was fast, and I ended up giving birth in my car in the parking lot with Julie holding my hand and giving me the best piece of advice anyone could have at that moment: “Some women try horse lips at this point.”

I have no doubt in my mind that that reminder from her allowed me to effortlessly push one last time to meet my healthy and beautiful baby. I had even read that tip months previously, but my mind was so focused on the sensations of birth that I had completely forgotten about it. Julie was exactly where I needed her to be and said exactly what I needed to hear at that moment.

If my husband and I ever have another baby then I will without any hesitation ask Julie to be our doula again.
