We had a great experience with Megan. This was my second and we had an ok, but not great, experience with our first doula. Our first doula mostly just seemed like yet another person who was there along with all the nurses and doctors, and she didn't add much. For our second experience we tried harder to find a doula that seemed like a good fit for us and someone who we thought would make a real difference in the room. Megan was the right choice.
One thing we really valued is that Megan was non-judgmental of our birth plans. Every doula I've spoken with says they are open and supportive of different kinds of birth experiences but what some doulas that we have interacted with seem to mean is that they are open to preferences like home births, limited interventions, etc. and will tend to want to push you in those directions. I wanted a hospital birth with an epidural at a point of my chosing and generally wanted to follow all of the medical recommendations. I still wanted a doula because I thought that a good doula would help make the experience less stressful by being a consistent helpful presence and be able to provide non-medical recommendations (postures to try, etc.) that could complement medical strategies to make the birth smoother. Megan was the right doula for this. She worked well with the L&D nurses to help my labor go as smoothly as possible and helped enable my wife to be the best support person she could be.
My first labor experience ended with a c-section before I fully dilated, so my second birth experience was the first time I progressed to pushing. Megan was absolutely amazing at helping to coach through the pushing stage. There were also nurses, my wife, and doctors off and on, of course, but Megan was fantastic at coaching, helping me move in different positions, counting out loud for me, and working with my wife to make sure I had a never ending supply of water, apple juice, and cool cloths.
