I gave birth twice in 2023—once on New Year’s Day and again just days before Christmas. Tonya sacrificed time with her own family during the holidays to be there for us, and her presence made all the difference. After 17 years since my previous birth, it felt like I was experiencing childbirth for the first time again—this time with more autonomy and intention. Aware of the alarming rates of mistreatment and mortality Black women face during childbirth, I intentionally chose a Black doula—someone who understood birth, understood me, and could advocate without hesitation.
From the beginning, Tonya made me feel safe and supported. Her knowledge, attention to detail, and genuine care transformed my entire experience. During prenatal visits where I often felt unheard or overlooked, Tonya was a steady source of reassurance and advocacy. She consistently shared evidence-based resources that empowered me to make informed decisions for my family.
On both delivery days, Tonya set the tone. When my concerns were dismissed and I felt pressured into choices I wasn’t ready to make, she stepped in immediately. She didn’t just advocate—she became my voice when mine was ignored, ensuring I was heard, respected, and treated with dignity during my most vulnerable moments.
Tonya also intentionally included my husband, helping him feel confident and prepared for both birth and life with newborns. Our family was truly blessed by her calm, grounding presence and unwavering support. I cannot imagine my birth experiences without her.
Tonya is an irreplaceable part of my birth journey, and I am honored to serve as a reference on her behalf. I have full confidence that she will be an invaluable asset to any family she supports.
