It felt like yesterday although it was almost 13 years ago when I was laboring at home in NYC. It was my first birth that I had decided to do natural but still in a hospital. I can't tell if I was scared as I was just going with the flow until Maiysha stepped into my apartment. I still remembered how relieved I felt at the sight of her. She is much taller than me and without a word, I rested my head on her shoulder and I felt my labor pain just went away. Maiysha had been informed as soon as my contraction started at 2am. She had been checking in on me every now and then since. With her virtually telling me I'm doing a great job, it was very reassuring. She was very calm and decisive. She can tell via texts if it was time for her to show up and accompany me to the hospital. And she did just that and knowing I had someone who I can trust when I was most vulnerable was the best feeling I had ever had. The journey from my departure from my apartment to the final push at the hospital felt like an odyssey. But there was not a moment I didn't feel supported and cared for. Maiysha held my hands tight, pressed my hips hard, whispered encouragement to my ears, calmly negotiated with the nurses and doctor according to my wishes. She stepped forward, when I was at lost of words due to exhaustion, to tell the nurses the dos and don'ts to my newborn. She even followed the nurse to the nursery to make sure my baby is taken care of according to my wishes. After I went home, Maiysha came to visit a couple of time to teach me how to nurse the baby. She was the one who spotted a tongue tie and recommended doctor to clip the tie so my daughter could finally latch. I was so grateful for her professional knowledge and calm presence at my birth that I had to have her back for my second birth at home. Maiysha was born to be a doula and I was so lucky to have her at my children's births.
