To put the bottom line up-front, working with Shelly for our birth was one of the best decisions we've ever made. Among doulas, Shelly is unique in that she provides prenatal support, support during birth (as much and as long as it takes, by the way), as well as postpartum support including breastfeeding support using her expertise as a lactation consultant. In my case, I suspect my goal of an unmedicated vaginal birth might not have been possible without Shelly's help, but her lactation support after birth was equally crucial. When our little one had hard time latching and began to lose weight, our pediatrician pressured us to supplement with formula, which was not our goal. During that difficult time, it was Shelly who not only encouraged us to persist with breastfeeding, but also came to our house and offered hands-on support by doing weighted feeds in our living room, observing our little one, and demonstrating more effective nursing positions. As a result of this support, we've so far succeeded in exclusively breastfeeding, and our little one's weight gain has started to surpass the curve. Overall, I cannot recommend Shelly strongly enough--as a doula, as an expert, and as a friend.
