As second time parents we debated whether hiring a Doula would be “worth it” this time around, but we are so glad we connected with Barbie even as seasoned parents. It is easy for birth to feel like it is happening to you, as opposed to an experience that you have control over, especially in a hospital setting where I have given birth both times. It made a huge difference to have Barbie in our corner, looking out for my needs before I could think of them, encouraging me to take a beat before making medical decisions, and advocating for what was most important for me in my birth plan. Without her steady presence during labor and postpartum I know certain aspects of my birth would not have gone as smoothly. Postpartum, Barbie’s calm and nurturing presence helped us settle in as a family as she connected us with lactation resources, shared wisdom, and helped us with meal prep which was such a treat for our family.
