After my son was born, I kept telling everyone that hiring a doula was the best decision we made. But the more I think about it, the more I realize it wasn’t just hiring any doul — it was hiring Adriana specifically. I can’t imagine a more caring and capable person to have had by my side. I was induced and had an epidural. She tended to me all night: she covered me with blankets and tucked me in, changed my position every half hour, and shushed me to sleep — I felt so safe. Of course, I didn’t know everything at the time. Adriana would fill me in later. At one point, she was using a rebozo on me, shimmying my belly with the scarf and talking to the baby. I thought it was nice, although the reason she was doing it was not particularly nice. My baby’s heart rate was dipping repeatedly throughout the night. All the position changes and manipulations were meant to help it recover. The rebozo worked — his heart rate went up. She did not sleep for a second, and her attention to every detail of the process allowed me to progress without unnecessary interventions. Without her, they would have taken me for a C-section; there were several points when this was a real possibility. She worked seamlessly with the hospital staff and made sure they followed my birth plan. I am forever grateful to Adriana for everything she did for us. If we ever have another baby, she will be the first person on my support team.
