As a husband to a doula, I had some familiarity with what goes into pregnancy and how doulas help. But when my wife and I were preparing to welcome our son to the world, we needed help from somebody who was wise and compassionate advocate and teacher for the journey ahead. Since my wife had seen plenty of other doulas at work, her confidence in and desire to hire Rachel meant a whole lot to me.
Meeting Rachel made it obvious why my wife had so much confidence in her. She educated me on helpful things abouf the typical stages of labor and gave practical tips on stretches that could support throughout the 2nd and 3rd trimester. I was awed not only by her experienced insight but her calm demeanor. She is truly a non-anxious presence, and her ability to empathize with my wife and me in all of the questions, doubts, and hopes was so meaningful.
We had an unmedicated birth at home, and thanks to our Evidence Based Birth class and Rachel's guidance through it, we felt prepared for any possibilities including emergency trips to the hospital, dealing with difficult decisions and people, etc. Though I'd never see a birth, I had a sense of confidence in how I could be there to support my wife through each phase of it. And I had no doubt that our amazing team (Rachel very much included) would be a rock through it all.
We were thankfully able to have the birth we wanted: at home and unmedicated. With a quick progression into active labor, our midwife was amazing and on-top of everything to monitor baby's health. Rachel's presence brought so much peace to this new territory for us, and I was grateful for the many creative ways she stepped in to support my wife mentally, emotionally, and physically.
Even in the weeks that followed our son's arrival, Rachel checked in and showed up for us with kindness, consistency, and wisdom. I am so grateful we had Rachel with us through every stage of this process!
