I met Kim about five years before having my baby while I photographed a client’s birth. I had no idea what a doula was. My only knowledge of birth came from my mom’s horror stories and TV, which of course, terrified me.
That all changed when I witnessed Kim guide my client through labor. I had never seen birth look so… ‘easy?’ Maybe not the best word, but it felt that way. I knew then without a doubt I wanted Kim there for me during my labor experience.
She made my husband and I feel like a “birth expert” with her prenatal education classes. She gave me confidence to advocate for myself. Without this, I might have agreed to an early membrane sweep, frequent cervical checks, and definitely early pushing—but I knew to ask questions to my provider and trust my gut.
It’s not an exaggeration to say that I don’t think my birth experience would have been ANYWHERE near as positive as it was if it weren’t for her. I owe it to her that I look back with happiness when I think about even the worst contractions. Her guidance through breath work during labor was pivotal. And ladies…. BREATH CONTROL IS EVERYTHING. Some contractions barely hurt—just felt uncomfortable (I couldn’t believe it.) BUT when I forgot my breath, it was INTENSE.
And what do you know… your girl had a safe, happy, positive labor. Teen me would have never thought ?? But alas, I am that b****. I am strong as hell and did the damn thing. I faced my Mt. Everest. Birthed a beautiful child safely into this world. And I truly can’t thank Kim enough because she made that possible for me.
