We had an amazing experience working with Carolyn at District Doulas. Michele and Jackie, also at District Doulas, were wonderful as well, but we ended up working with Carolyn more directly. District Doulas generally also has an amazing set of resources -- documents and videos, classes, etc. -- to prepare you for pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum recovery, and newborn care.
I ended up with an induction, which I initially felt prepared for, but had some curve balls along the way, including but not limited to three failed epidural attempts in the lead-up to and during active labor. Carolyn's support during this time, and during pushing, immediate postpartum, and the weeks postpartum was absolutely indispensable.
I didn't completely understand the role of a doula before going into labor -- my husband and I knew we wanted to work with someone and felt confident about hiring District Doulas and working with Carolyn, but she was more supportive than I could ever have imagined. I don't know how I would have handled an (unexpected) unmedicated childbirth without her, and everything ended up going smoothly.
Carolyn provided the three most important things to me personally: an analytical, data-informed resource; an emotionally supportive and empathetic listening ear and sounding board; and, physically, an absolutely necessary extra set of hands throughout. (She literally helped to hold up my legs while I was pushing. And a week later, helped us out with one overnight newborn care postpartum, which let us get much-needed sleep.) I'm not someone who often asks for help, but I felt completely comfortable going to Carolyn with anything, and with her seeing my husband and me at our most vulnerable. She is incredibly smart and knowledgable, caring, and worked extremely well alongside the medical team at our birthing hospital.
We hope to have a second child down the line, and we know we will be working with Carolyn again if so!
