I can’t say enough good things about JCD, and Katie in particular. Communication was always a breeze, between utilizing different platforms to contact them, and the fact that it’s a team of 3 meant that there were always eyes looking out for messages; it felt like all of our questions and comments were received and responded to much quicker than we expected. From remembering that the cafeteria bagel I ate during my previous labor was just terrible, to reminding my husband to ask to put a Diet Coke in the fridge, to her gentle, physical reassurances while I used nitrous oxide, Katie’s presence during labor was supportive and vital to how positive our birth experience was. I remember during Katie’s Childbirth Classes that yes/no questions are easier during labor and thinking ‘oh, no, I’m sure I’ll want lots of options’; in the moment, I was so appreciative of her guidance of yes/no questions! I didn’t go in to birth expecting to want/need to use pain medications: my 1st labor was unmedicated, and this labor was more uncomfortable. i felt really affirmed and assured by Katie that I was capable of making decisions for my body, and that she was supportive whatever I chose. I did ask for nitrous oxide, and am (still) relieved that I did. Utilizing pain medication made me feel empowered that I could continue laboring in a way that felt authentic and good for me. The cadence and routine of using the nitrous became a ‘spontaneous ritual’ that Katie talks about during class — also reinforcing what I’d felt from Katie when I made the decision to use the pain medication. I don’t want to say “I can’t give birth without JCD”, but I can say “I don’t want to give birth without JCD!” Our family just found out that baby #3 is on the way, and are looking forward to working with JCD in the spring for their arrival!
