Jet City Doulas supported our very scary, very preterm labor experience in a way that allows our family to look back at our labor and birth experience and not feel re-traumatized. The evening I went into labor it was like 90º and I was hot and tired and pregnant and tired of being pregnant. I thought I’d been having Braxton Hicks for a few hours, but none of the ‘try this and wait and see’ things I knew about were slowing them down. I waited (probably longer than I should have) to contact JCD, but when the nurses confirmed that my water had broken, my husband reached out. Katie arrived so quickly to the hospital, and just her presence made it feel like the entire room was able to take a deep breath. I eventually needed an ambulance transfer to another hospital, and Katie even drove my exhausted husband to UW Montlake so that everyone made it there safe! We weren’t as prepared for childbirth as we’d hoped (we didn’t even have a birth plan yet; that JCD appointment was scheduled the next week!) but Katie did a great job of gently relaying ‘doctor talk’ to me, after our baby was in the NICU with my husband — it really helped hearing the ‘layman’s terms’ explanation after the medical providers were finished. Having Katie with me was an unexpected perk of having her as a doula — because our little one went directly to the NICU, my husband did, too — if we didn’t have Katie, I would have been alone for an extended period of time. In an already very scary situation full of ‘what-if’s’, I can’t imagine what it would have been like (especially emotionally) if I wouldn’t have had Katie by my side. Our family recommends JCD (and Katie!) so highly — we are so grateful that our birth was supported by Jet City Doulas.
