Veronica was a wonderful doula for my labor and delivery. I was reluctantly getting an induction and I was very discouraged about it. Despite my bad attitude, Veronica kept a positive outlook and reminded me of the choices and options I had in the process. She noticed that my mood improved when I was out of bed and moving around, so she encouraged me to stay on my feet when I could. At one point the doctor seemed to want me to make a quick decision about how to proceed. Veronica recognized that I was conflicted and advocated for me by asking if I wanted to take some more time to think about it.
When labor started getting intense Veronica was ready with the comfort measures we had discussed plus her own suggestions of labor positions to try. My husband mostly helped with counter-pressure but Veronica was quick to step in when he needed relief. Toward the end of labor when nothing helped and I wanted to give up, Veronica was a steady voice of encouragement reminding me that I could do it. Finally, when everything was over, Veronica sent a great little set of photos that she somehow managed to take in the midst of everything. I’m really grateful to have that handful of images to remember the experience.
Afterward I sort of apologized to my mother who had been there for the entire process also. She is a former labor and delivery nurse and assisted with the births of her other grandchildren, but this time she ended up sitting on the sidelines somewhat. My mom replied that Veronica did an phenomenal job so she was happy to step back and let Veronica take the lead. Ultimately I was really pleased with this birth, and Veronica made a big difference in how things turned out. I wish I could have had her as a doula for my previous child too!
