Jackie was our doula for both of my births (one with GW Hospital midwives and one at a birth center) and I feel so lucky to have had her as part of our small team. District Doulas provides the free trainings throughout your pregnancy but the best part of hiring them is how personal the relationship becomes. We truly felt comfortable reaching out to the team for anything, which takes so much of the stress and fear out of pregnancy and childbirth. I didn't want to get to the hospital too early and get turned away or pressured into intervnetions, so having them be able to hear (over the phone!) where I was in labor and advise helped me get the birth experience I want. Both of my babies were breech late in pregnancy and they provided advice and support in my trying to turn them (both turned!). They helped me narrow in on what were truly my priorities in a birth plan so we could advocate to get it (and what to do when options got reduced in the moment). In my second birth, my water broke days before contractions started. Jackie really helped me understand the options and various risks associted with them (not just medical risks but risks to my hopes, etc.) and then came to my house for hands-on support to get things going. Contractions started while she was there so she stayed through early labor and moved with us to the birth center. She was the perfect teammate. She lets you be the leader, is there when you need her but never feels like there's a stranger in your most intimate experience. She will use her expertise to offer suggestions that might help but continually reminds you that you have what you need to do this with your baby. She took pictures and videos (with my permission) that are absolutely invaluable to me and helped us process the experience afterwards, including sharing beatiful insights. She continued to be our trustetd support in post partum, sharing expertise when we asked for it and championing our ability to parent.
