In short - Hiring Kathie was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life.
To ellaborate - We hired Kathie only a week before I ended up going into labor because I realized last minute that my husband and I would really benefit from a Doula. We clicked immediately on the phone and she wisely set up a prenatal meeting the next day since she knew baby could be coming anytime. I told her that I was determined to give birth without an epidural and she responded to me saying "Franee, you will do it. I can hear it in your voice and by what you are saying that you will do it." That's when I knew we needed to hire Kathie - she believed in me from the start.
On the day I went into Labor Kathie joined us at the hospital once we had been admitted to our room and immediately brought such a comfort to both my husband and myself because of her experience with labor and also her familiarity with hospital births.
For various reasons too complicated to explain here, I ended up having to take cytotec and receive pitocin. My water had also already broken AND my baby was sunny side up (which Kathie recognized as soon as she arrived) - aka I was in a tremendous amount of pain and laboring was extremely intense.
Kathie did so much for me during my labor. She did all the practical things you want your Doula to do - provide exptertise, help with coping technicques, etc.
But I the biggest thing she did was continuously remind me and my husband that I could do it - I could endure this and make it to the other side. There were times when I had lost all hope, but hearing an expert tell you she believes in you when all you want to do is quit is worth its weight in gold. My husband and I cannot thank Kathie enough for what she did for us and I am so incredibly thankful that we hired her.
Kathie, you walked me through the hardest thing I have ever done in my entire life and for that I am forever grateful.
