When I first learned I was pregnant, I was determined to enjoy each trimester as it came, feeling each week’s highs and lows, my little raspberry gradually becoming a plum, a celery, a pineapple?! How many times in my life would I have this experience?
I think I was also determined to avoid worrying, consummate procrastinator that I am, about the grand finale.
Somewhere in the second trimester, as my baby announced herself to the world, and realized herself as more than an abstract future, I started to really think about her entrance. Or maybe, I was focused on her exit? Frankly, I was scared. That was when I found Joyce.
From our first interview I felt relief and confidence. Joyce helped me, and my partner, to feel prepared. When the day finally came and the contractions began, I felt many things, but I was not scared. Joyce coached my breathing and physically guided me through each stage of labor. She watched over me at home and suggested when it was time to leave for the hospital. Joyce is a gifted birth worker and I am so grateful she was my doula.
