I can’t possibly picture the birth of my daughter without Julie. After a difficult first trimester, Julie gave me the gift I was longing for: a relationship that allowed me to shift into a grounded, joyful, magical experience of my pregnancy.
As someone who was having my first child on my own at 41 – after a multitude of intense caregiving experiences – most of the narratives I encountered about the transition to motherhood didn’t feel like they fit me. Julie helped me create my own. She had such a gift for reflecting back the feelings and questions I shared with her in a way that was both deeply affirming, and also amplified my awareness of the beauty in my own experiences. Forming a relationship to the act of giving birth as you approach it is so individual and universal at the same time. In her support of birthing people, Julie makes an art out of inhabiting both of those dimensions at once.
In my third trimester, my life threw a farcical number of curveballs at me. Julie was with me every step of the way, supporting me both practically and emotionally. Her knowledge about pregnancy, birth, and postpartum runs deep; she offered herself as an essential sounding board and resource-connector, always centering my autonomy as I weighed my options.
By the time we arrived at my labor, I felt so deeply seen and known by her. Her collaboration with my incredible midwife, Gina Eichenbaum-Pikser, was so organic, and her stamina was unbelievable! When you go into labor, you really do enter another dimension, and Julie knows how to go there with you. She IS light. I can’t recommend her enough.
