As a husband to a first time Mom I wasn’t sure if getting a Doula was right for us. After interviewing Rachel and hearing about her emphasis on preparing me to be a supportive partner before and during birth, and hearing about the information we would learn in Evidence Based Birth (EBB) and Spinning Babies I knew we needed to add her to our birth team and I am so glad we did.
Going into the final days of pregnancy, I was confident in my ability to support my wife, our birth plan, and our backup plan due to Rachel’s extensive prep. When labor started, I knew what to do to support my wife. When Rachel came to our house during active labor she did an amazing job caring for my wife. She made sure my wife had the physical support she needed with positions, food, and water. She made sure I was helping my wife too - showing me how to provide the right level of counterpressure and encouragement for my wife.
At the Birth Center, Rachel continued to show me how to provide hands-on support to my wife. When we had to unexpectedly transfer to the hospital I knew we were prepared despite it not being what we were hoping for thanks to Rachel’s extensive prep.
Rachel prepared us on how to build rapport with the hospital staff, which was very valuable in preserving key components of our birth plan. I knew the names of drugs and procedures thanks to the EBB class Rachel taught. Rachel’s prep enabled me to protect my wife’s space and decisions in the hospital so she felt safe and heard. To top it off, Rachel stayed overnight so she could check on us after the birth.
Rachel helped me be a great birth partner to my wife and the birth experience brought us closer as a couple because I was able to effectively support my wife through some difficult times. I credit Rachel with helping me learn how to show up for my wife in the best way during birth and I cannot imagine future births without her.
