Ugh, where do I even start with Scarlett? I guess I’ll start from my last minute decision to get a doula. I was back and forth about it and 1 week before my due date, I met with another amazing doula, Jen, hired her, but I was introduced to Scarlett (through Jen) in case I went into labor before or on my due date (Jen was going to be out of town). Turns out the day before my due date, I went into labor. I loved having an option to be able to contact Scarlett to tell her how I was feeling and how best to proceed. My goal was to labor mostly at home and have an unmedicated birth. I labored for awhile at home before Scarlett came over. My husband and I tried techniques we learned in birthday classes and BOY did we forget what we learned. I just remember thinking “how am I going to do this?!” As soon as Scarlett came over she had such a calming presence and looked at me, noticed me trying to act cool while simultaneously feeling like my body was betraying me, and asked me “are you having a contraction?” She immediately did this pressure point to my upper back and OH MY GOD. We than did all kinds of positions and breathing to make the contractions not feel so horrid (and help re-focus my energy!) We eventually went to the hospital and she was an amazing resource and was so helpful as an advocate for me and my wishes. My husband and mom were there, but Scarlett was the true hero of my labor/birth. She remained calm, collected and helped me focus my energy. I was able to birth my sweet baby girl unmedicated and TRULY I don’t think I could’ve done it without Scarlett by my side. I’m sure I swore, was snippy and I totally pooped but Scarlett remained professional, calm, and just freaking amazing. Listen, I’ve been telling everyone, even if you want medications, you have to get a c-section, GET A DOULA. They’re a god send and the world needs more Scarlett’s.
