Sarah made my birth feel like mine not something I had to defend.
As a trans person, I came into this process carrying a lot of fear. I’ve had too many experiences in healthcare where my identity was ignored or questioned, and I was bracing myself for that again. Meeting Sarah changed everything. From the very first conversation, she asked my pronouns, respected my language for my body, and never made me feel like I had to explain or justify who I am.
During pregnancy, she became my safe place. She helped me prepare for possible challenges with providers, role-played advocacy scenarios so I’d feel ready, and reminded me that my identity wasn’t a “complication” — it was simply part of my story. She held space for both my excitement about becoming a parent and the complicated feelings I had about my body changing.
When labor started, Sarah was my shield and my anchor. She made sure hospital staff used the right name and pronouns, and when I was too tired to speak up, she stepped in without hesitation. She brought calm when things felt intense and never once let me feel like I was alone in the room.
After my baby arrived, she stayed long enough to make sure I was settled and emotionally okay, not just physically. She checked in days later, not with generic questions, but with genuine care about me as a person, not just as a patient.
If you are a trans or nonbinary parent-to-be, know this: Sarah will respect you, protect you, and celebrate you. She will fight for your dignity without making it a fight you have to carry yourself. I am forever grateful she was in my corner.
