Almost six months ago, I had a very traumatic birth experience-- difficult labor and emergency c-section with intraoperative pain and post-operative complications. I was in the hospital in agonizing pain for 8 days. In the midst of my suffering, my mind fixated on a mantra: "I will get postpartum healing work with Fatima. I will get postpartum healing work with Fatima. I will." I hung onto the hope that my body was going to receive the attention, healing and love after the trial it was going through. When I was discharged from the hospital, Fatima delivered postpartum meals, After 8 days of hardly any food, I finally felt deeply nourished. I had also arranged for other postpartum sessions after the requisite six-weeks post-C-section recovery time. The first was the belly binding session that began with a gentle massage with warm healing oil and then instruction on how to use the Bengkung belly bind. After pregnancy, labor and delivery, my organs felt loose and the belly bind really helped me feel more secure in my abdomin area. I also signed up for the hamam and closing the bones ceremony: warm water, detoxifying clay body exfoliation, warm oil massage and then wrapped all along my body in beautiful fabric. The closing the bones ceremony was a soothing cocoon experience; the swaddling --the soft pressure around me-- was deeply restorative. Fatima told me later that this Moroccan tradition was also performed on soldiers returning from war. The wrapping and security of the swaddle are known to be deeply soothing to the nervous system. When I was unwrapped, I felt calmer, renewed. We ended with a beautiful postpartum herbal tea. I can say with confidence that had I not arranged for these treatments after my traumatic birth experience, my body would still be hanging on to that trauma.
