I am so deeply grateful for my experience Jean as our birth doula. In my introductory call with Jean, she described the importance of creating an emotional support plan. I had never heard of an emotional support plan, but with my first daughter, I had an emergency c-section, and the emotional distress caused by that experience has lingered ever since. Thanks to Jean’s guidance and support, I had a successful unmedicated VBAC to deliver my second daughter, and the experience was very empowering and healing. Jean is incredibly knowledgeable and warm, and she put me and my partner at ease in our prenatal appointments, answering all our questions and creating space to dig into some of my fears around medical interventions. I went to 41 weeks, and Jean was the first person I texted after each appointment with the midwives to work through potential induction methods. Jean’s advice and encouragement during this incredibly stressful time kept me sane. During labor, Jean created a relaxing environment in the hospital, spent hours overnight walking with me, and suggested a variety of positions to keep labor progressing. Most importantly of all though, Jean empowered me to make decisions throughout pregnancy and, critically, during labor. I ended up requesting things which I had written off on the birth plan (e.g. pitocin, when my labor stalled), but I felt supported, wellinformed and confident that I was making the right choices for myself and my baby. When it came time to push, it was Jean who suggested the position that ended up being the most effective, and she coached me, my partner and the hospital staff through it. Throughout labor, she was calm, encouraging, and her words of affirmation were incredibly supportive, all of which helped me keep my focus and mindset through hours of back labor. Thanks to Jean, my birth experience was powerfully healing, and I will remember it for the rest of my life with pride.
