Eight weeks postpartum, and we're still referring to our notes from sessions with Katharine! We hired her to support us in an unmedicated hospital birth at Kaiser and couldn't have asked for a more attentive or more knowledgeable doula, with a clear ethical core at the center of her practice. She was exactly the energy we needed in the room every step of the way. Our home visits were packed to the brim with information and resources tailored to our approach, from preparing for the birth through to postpartum, and newborn care. Even though we read plenty of books and took a childbirth class, Katharine — a skilled and experienced educator — played the singular role of synthesizing the information and painting a picture of how it would apply to our specific situation given our birth preferences.
At the birth, Katharine was an absolute champ! She supported us through the toughest parts of a very long labour, providing pain relief, making sure we were both eating and drinking enough, helping to interface with the hospital staff, and generally keeping the mood up for almost 30 hours. We felt safe and supported through the entire process and it’s hard to imagine how we would have gotten through it without her! Her expertise as a board-certified lactation consultant was the cherry on top, helping to fill the gaps in what we learned in the post-partum ward and breastfeeding class.
