I had the birth experience I was hoping for, thanks to Brittany and her doula partner, Jeanette.
I started working with Brittany and Jeanette at the recommendation of a friend who had just given birth. As someone with no birth experience, an anxious personality, and a medical condition (epilepsy), I immediately loved that I would be working with both of them, which would ensure that I would see a familiar face whenever I went into labor.
Prior to the birth, Brittany and Jeanette struck the perfect balance of thoughtfully encouraging me to articulate what I wanted while filling in my knowledge gaps. Their community-oriented approach to birth made me feel welcomed and calm and safe enough to ask anything.
For the birth itself, I worked with Jeanette. She was an absolute angel, arriving when I was just starting to experience contractions. From that moment on, everything Jeanette did was an extraordinary combination of deeply intuitive, expert, and heart-centered. She immediately suggested a MUCH better position and a better way to breathe that got me through two hours of contractions. Jeanette seemed to know exactly when to step in and help me vs. when I wanted to focus on what was happening: and in doing so, allowed me and my partner to be SO much more present. Jeanette took notes on what was happening, took photos of our first moments as a family, facilitated ASAP breastfeeding and latching (I had no idea what to do), and made sure that skin-to-skin contact happened.
The fact that Brittany and Jeanette check in after the birth enriches the experience further. Their wisdom, joy, and long list of sleep consultants, lactation consultants, etc. they can recommend (!!) creates security in those first strange, ecstatic, sleep-deprived weeks.
I've already recommended BKBC and Brittany and Jeanette to multiple friends and will continue to do so!
