If you’re considering working with a doula—you’ve made the right choice. I had the support of Milla and Melinda, and I truly can’t imagine going through birth without them.
They helped us create what was considered as a birth plan, but I have relabled as my birth decision tree. We walked through ideal outcomes and what might come up if things didn’t go as planned. And they didn’t—my birth went off the rails at nearly every turn. But because we’d done the prep, I didn't view any of it negatively. I understood the questions being asked, the options, and what I wanted. During labor, I couldn’t give more than a “yes” or “no” 98% of the time—but my husband and doulas knew what I needed and spoke up for me.
They were also a huge support to my husband. From timing contractions and knowing when to leave, to scouting hospitals and parking, food, and giving him breaks, they allowed him to be fully present with me. They even made sure we tossed the opened yogurt before we left the house!
Their class, Get That Baby Out, was amazing. The exercises helped relieve late-pregnancy discomfort and gave us tools to support labor. Melinda coached me through early labor movements; Milla supported the final stretch, advocated for me, helped us transition to recovery, and even supported breastfeeding.
Before the birth, they helped us set up our home to be more efficient and comfortable. Afterward, they helped us process the birth, looked out for signs of postpartum depression, and helped us feel confident as new parents.
I cannot thank them enough. Their presence (as advertised) calm and confident, expertise, and support were truly invaluable.
