I was on the fence about hiring a doula for my second birth, but once I met Scarlett I knew I wanted her by my side. Her calm, warm presence immediately put me at ease as she thoughtfully answered each of my questions with her full presence. I had been curious about unmedicated birth but lacked confidence. Scarlett believed in me though, and not in a way that overemphasized unmedicated birth as a goal. I knew she had my back no matter what path my birth took.
During our prenatal visits, Scarlett took time to understand both my needs and my partner’s, ensuring we all felt prepared going into the birth. In labor, Scarlett seemed to know exactly what I needed before I could even speak it. She also advocated for me and my preferences clearly and respectfully in a way that was simple and direct without being adversarial. With Scarlett’s support, I had a gentle unmedicated hospital birth that honored every single one of my birth wishes. It’s hard to put Scarlett’s skills into words, but she is truly someone who was meant to do this work and I don’t think I could have had the birth experience I did without her invaluable support.
As an unexpected bonus, Scarlett used my phone to take many photos and videos of my labor, birth, and the sacred moments immediately following. Some of the photos I didn’t even know I would want/need, but they really helped me piece together my experience. I have a history of trauma and it was surprisingly reassuring to see photos of exactly what was happening to my body while I was off in labor land.
After the birth Scarlett’s regular check-ins, thoughtful resources/referrals, and home visits made my partner and I feel cared for and supported during a time where we needed it most.
