First, if you are considering a doula - DO IT. DO IT. DO IT. Second, if you are considering who to have as your doula... the answer is Shannon. I cannot begin to express our gratitude for Shannon and the NOVA Birth Services team - words truly do not cover it. Leading up to the birth Shannon checked in on us, and the team held parental empowerment sessions where we learned about different topics and resources to help us both leading up to birth, during delivery, and post partum. Without the resources provided, we wouldnt have known anything in preparation for birth - and let me tell you knowledge is key! During the delivery process Shannon was there for both me and my partner. She made sure to help explain and give us time to think through the different options being presented, helped us advocate or ask more questions when we were confused or needed more information, and then supported our decisions. Shannon also helped us move into so many different positions, both to get baby moving down the canal, as well as when it came time to push. It was especially helpful to have her hand to hold during the process, and get her support. After the birth Shannon came over for a post partum visit (which by the way - make sure to purchase that. Trust me, I didn't think I needed it, I was stubborn, and turns out it was probably the most helpful time we had with anyone post delivery). During the post partum visit Shannon helped us review the birth process, and talk through questions and memories we had. She then helped alleviate a lot of anxiety we were having about spit up, and other first time parent concerns. Then she stayed to help make sure we had a good latch, were understanding baby cues, and could pace feed with a bottle. Shannon is truly a remarkable doula and we cannot recommend her enough!
