Suzanne and Cari had the biggest impact on my pregnancy, delivery and breastfeeding experience. We had a hard situation of my clinic closing mid-pregnancy and Suzanne told me what was happening before my doctor did and helped me figure out what to do next. Their understanding of all the birth locations and practitioner options in the greater Seattle area was knowledge wouldn’t know how to get from any other source.
Being able to text for immediate and specific advice helped me through all the unexpected situations before and after giving birth. Before each scheduled video call with them, I’d compile a list of all my questions and I never stumped them! Their advice on pumping and sleeping in shifts saved us from sleep deprivation during our first month with a newborn (visitors almost seemed disappointed that we seemed rested!)
Cari helped prepare me and my husband for what my options are when labor started, knowledge which came in handy when my water broke in the middle of the night. Suzanne’s presence for over 24 hours with me at the hospital made me feel safe and focused. She took care of me, guided my husband on how to help and pushed me to try things to progress my labor beyond what I thought I was capable of. At the key intervention moments, it was helpful to have her remind me that I have agency to follow the hospitals recommendations or to wait. My birth plan was flexible and I ended up trying laboring in and outside the tub, using nitrous oxide and eventually an epidural. I’m proud of myself, happy with how it all went and loved meeting my baby boy.
When any friends express interest in having kids, our first advice is to hire a doula, and especially hire our doulas!
