Mia threaded the needle between advocating my wishes and pushing my limits to achieve what I wanted despite the unpredictable, primal labor experience. Mia never lost her cool. She calmly handled each question, hard conversation, anxious support person, and me (from pregnant and over-preparing to postpartum). My minimum goal was to accept what this second birth experience gave me, but my true goal was to labor and birth exactly how I’d envisioned. Mia listened, advised, and did not antagonize or supply an agenda. She addressed incorrect assumptions and unrealistic requests. She explained her experience with medical systems in our area, affirming my birth location and team choices. She knows the “good” and “bad” places to give birth, and that it’s dependent upon your wants. Mia read between the lines, knowing what I needed versus wanted to hear. She also knows when to be a quiet presence. Mia discretely staged the labor and delivery room; it felt like a spa. Her spiky handheld labor balls, TENS unit, and comfort techniques complemented her knowledge, preparation, and education. She tastefully captured raw and emotional memories that I was surprised I wanted to revisit. As needed, she adjusted the amount of “woo woo” I requested, reading my nonverbal signals. She was in my head in a good way which helped me achieve an unmedicated VBAC that holds no trauma, only triumph. Nothing heals a bad birth, especially not another birth. Mia knows this. She guided me and my partner through the experience, at a certain point proverbially dragging me within sight of my “finish line.” She served as a coach and a witness to the most metal experience a human can have. Mia eased my partner’s concerns, allowing me to focus on myself and my baby. She’s funny as hell, empathetic beyond measure, and knows her shit. Hire her already.
