The short version: you won’t regret having Renee as your doula! She’ll be in your corner every step of the way, from processing prenatal appts, to birth prep class in your home, to tough decision making, to bringing a semblance of your dream birth back into the labor you could not have foreseen.
The long version: After four days and nights of latent labor at home, I went to the hospital for pain management to rest, ultimately helping me decide to get the epidural and induce so that I would have the strength (and baby would have the strength) to birth. While this was not my plan A (or my plan B), and I had chosen a team that agreed this was not my ideal story, Renee supported my decisions every step of the way. When I unexpectedly went from 3 centimeters to 10 in the space of a couple hours, she jumped in her car and was by my side in time to push. She helped us bring our birth story closer to what we had envisioned by playing my birth playlist for me, taking photos and videos, coaching me through breathing while pushing, and requesting a mirror so I could see my own progress and strength. After the birth, she asked questions and took note of everything that happened since I was too exhausted to fully be there for myself as the umbilical cord broke and the placenta had to be manually extracted.
After we were discharged, Renee visited our home to talk through the birth with me, process my emotions, help us with breastfeeding, and be the encouragement and rock we needed. She even did our dishes. She continued to check in with us every few days for the first month.
We could not be more grateful for the role Renée played in our birth story. Our experience would not have been the same without her positivity, knowledge, and support.
